A Civic Event

On October 31, 2023, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Citizen University, produced A Civic Event, the first of its kind here in Gilbert. Hosted at the Gilbert Chamber, 20 community leaders came together to share stories of people who have helped them. The group then delved into deeper conversations about the barriers to having a community of ALL our dreams as well as solutions to overcome those barriers.

With inspirational tunes played on the keyboard by Xavier Morales and a delightful charcuterie table designed by Chef Megan Evanuska Morales, guests were motivated to share and participate. Book ended with inspiring poems, read by Denise Lopez of HD South and Jän Simon of Foundation Insurance Services, and a civic message delivered by Elaine Kessler of the Gilbert Chamber, the inaugural event was well attended and well received.

Some key takeaways from the discussions included the following:

Consider if Gilbert’s homogeneity is by design while also considering that Gilbert is young in the grand scheme of things; community building takes time – we are in the early part of the development curve.

Consider how to be a better storyteller instead of being reactive when faced with disagreement.

Consider being someone who says “Yes, and…” when encountering challenging conversations. Remember that none of us has all the right answers all the time.

Consider that lack of affordable housing contributes to an overall lack of contribution to our community – teachers should be able to live in the communities in which they teach.

The next free civic event, open to the public, will be December 6, 2023 at 3:15p at HD South, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum.
