Roots to Rockets: Gilbert’s Tech Story Comes to Life

On April 9, Gilbert didn’t just talk about innovation—it experienced it.

Through a dynamic, place-based event for Arizona Tech Week, Roots to Rockets: Gilbert’s Tech Story brought together community leaders, innovators, and partners to explore how Gilbert has grown from its agricultural beginnings into one of Arizona’s most forward-looking tech ecosystems.

Led in collaboration with the Town of Gilbert’s Office of Economic Development, The Catalyst, and the Gilbert Chamber’s Gilbert Next Level initiative, the day was intentionally designed as a journey—from past to present to future—highlighting how innovation is cultivated at every stage.

Starting at the Roots: Where Innovation Began

The day began at HD South, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, a fitting starting point for a story grounded in history and transformation.

As guests gathered in the courtyard, the message was clear: Gilbert’s innovation didn’t start with technology—it started with adaptation, creativity, and problem-solving.

Participants were invited into a self-guided museum “quest,” exploring exhibits that showcased the town’s agricultural origins—irrigation systems, rail access, and early infrastructure that once powered Gilbert as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World.”

But this wasn’t just a history lesson.

It was an invitation to reflect:

How do the same instincts that built canals and railways show up in today’s entrepreneurs, technologists, and leaders?

By engaging participants in an interactive experience, the event made one idea tangible: innovation is continuous—and it builds on what came before.

From Roots to Rockets: Technology Today in Gilbert

After reconnecting in the Severson Center, the program shifted into the present with a series of fast-paced, high-impact presentations from leaders shaping Gilbert’s innovation ecosystem today.

Each speaker represented a critical layer of Gilbert’s tech story:

  • Institutional leadership: The Town of Gilbert is actively modernizing through digital transformation, AI adoption, and smart city strategies—creating the conditions for innovation to scale responsibly.
  • Global industry presence: Companies like Northrop Grumman demonstrate that Gilbert can support advanced R&D and mission-critical work on a global scale—without companies needing to leave to grow.
  • Entrepreneurial momentum: Local founders are building and scaling companies right here in Gilbert, proving that success doesn’t require relocation to traditional tech hubs.
  • Workforce development: Partners like Maricopa Corporate College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College are ensuring that talent is intentionally developed, aligned to industry needs, and ready to fuel growth.

Through a moderated discussion, a consistent theme emerged:

Gilbert’s success isn’t accidental—it’s the result of intentional alignment between infrastructure, talent, leadership, and community culture.

The takeaway was powerful:

  • Government reduces friction
  • Industry builds trust and scale
  • Entrepreneurs create momentum
  • Education fuels the pipeline

Together, they create an ecosystem where: roots grow deeper, rockets launch stronger, and growth stays local.

Ignition Point: The Catalyst

Following the presentations, participants continued their journey into the Heritage District, where Gilbert’s past and future intersect in real time.

A highlight of the walking tour was The Catalyst, Gilbert’s business resource center and innovation hub.

If HD South represents Gilbert’s roots and today’s employers represent the rockets, then The Catalyst is the ignition point in between.

Born from a strategic partnership between the Town of Gilbert and the Gilbert Chamber Foundation, The Catalyst reflects a modern evolution of Gilbert’s founding spirit:

  • Where once the community built canals and rail systems
  • Today, it builds companies, ideas, and new pathways for entrepreneurship

The space is intentionally designed to:

  • Lower barriers for founders
  • Foster collaboration over competition
  • Support businesses at every stage—not just high-growth startups

It represents a bold investment in the idea that innovation should benefit the entire community.

Innovation in Action: The Heritage District

As the tour continued, participants experienced how placemaking, development, and design play a central role in Gilbert’s tech story.

Stops throughout the Heritage District highlighted:

  • Mixed-use development projects that support density, walkability, and talent attraction
  • Public spaces and infrastructure that enable connection, creativity, and collaboration
  • Future-forward planning that integrates sustainability, flexibility, and evolving work patterns

The district itself is emerging as an innovation zone—one where economic development is driven not just by buildings, but by experience.

A particularly powerful moment came through the exploration of public art, including the “Gema” mural, which reflects themes of resilience, inclusion, and community identity.

This reinforced an often-overlooked truth:

Innovation doesn’t just happen in labs or offices—it happens in environments that feel human, connected, and meaningful.

In Gilbert, storytelling, culture, and design are part of the innovation strategy.

A Community Designed for What’s Next

Throughout the day, participants were reminded that Gilbert’s growth is both intentional and strategic.

With:

  • A population of approximately 280,000
  • A highly educated workforce
  • Strong proximity to regional job centers
  • A high quality of life that attracts and retains talent

Gilbert is positioned as more than just a place to do business—it’s a place to build, scale, and stay.

Ending with Community

The event concluded, fittingly, with a shared lunch at Joe’s Real BBQ—a beloved local gathering place that reflects the heart of Gilbert itself.

Because while innovation may drive the future, community is what sustains it.

From Roots to Rockets

“Roots to Rockets” is more than a theme—it’s a framework for understanding how Gilbert grows.

  • It starts with strong foundations
  • It evolves through collaboration
  • It accelerates through intentional investment
  • And it succeeds because it stays connected to community

Through the combined efforts of the Office of Economic Development, The Catalyst, and Gilbert Next Level, Gilbert is building an ecosystem where innovation is not just possible—it’s sustainable, inclusive, and locally rooted.

As Arizona Tech Week spotlighted innovation across the state, Gilbert demonstrated something unique:

When a community invests in its roots, it creates the power to launch anything.
