Major Employers Share Insights on Workforce, Growth, and Gilbert's Business Climate

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce recently partnered with the Town of Gilbert Office of Economic Development and the Mayor's Office to host a Major Employer Roundtable, bringing together leaders from some of Gilbert's largest employers for a candid discussion about the opportunities and challenges impacting our business community.

The conversation highlighted several recurring themes, providing valuable insight into the current business climate and helping inform future economic development, workforce, and infrastructure priorities.

Workforce Remains the Top Concern

Across industries, employers emphasized that workforce challenges continue to be one of the most significant issues facing businesses today.

Participants discussed difficulties recruiting and retaining employees, particularly in healthcare, construction, and skilled trades. Several employers noted that rising housing costs and cost-of-living pressures are making it more difficult to attract and retain talent, while others expressed concern about the long-term pipeline of workers entering critical professions.

Construction employers specifically cited labor shortages, increasing wages, material costs, and extended project timelines as ongoing challenges affecting growth and development.

Many participants also highlighted the importance of retraining and upskilling adult workers, encouraging greater investment in workforce development programs that help individuals transition into high-demand careers.

Education and Workforce Development Are Closely Connected

Employers expressed concern about the impact that housing affordability is having on families and the ability of educators and essential workers to remain in the community.

The discussion reinforced the importance of strong partnerships between businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations to ensure that students and adult learners have access to career pathways that meet the needs of today's workforce.

Several participants also discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, noting that businesses will need to continue adapting and preparing employees for changing workplace expectations.

Businesses Value Gilbert's Strong Quality of Life

Despite the challenges discussed, participants were overwhelmingly positive about Gilbert as a place to do business.

Employers described Gilbert as a healthy, vibrant community with a strong talent base, excellent public safety services, and a business-friendly environment. Several attendees noted that the community's values, quality schools, and family-oriented culture remain significant advantages when recruiting employees and investing in the area.

Business leaders also highlighted Gilbert's strong sense of community and collaboration, noting that these characteristics continue to differentiate the town from many competing markets.

Infrastructure and Long-Term Planning Matter

Employers recognized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure to support future growth.

Topics included power reliability, transportation corridors, redevelopment opportunities, and maintaining critical infrastructure as Gilbert continues to evolve. Participants acknowledged the need for thoughtful planning that balances growth with long-term sustainability and quality of life.

Looking Ahead

The Major Employer Roundtable provided an important opportunity for business leaders to share real-time perspectives with Town leadership and economic development partners.

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce remains committed to serving as a bridge between the business community and local decision-makers, ensuring that employer voices help shape conversations around workforce development, economic growth, infrastructure investment, and the future of Gilbert's business climate.

We are grateful to the employers who invested their time and insights in this discussion and look forward to continuing these conversations throughout the year.
