A Civic Event No Strangers

Each quarter we host ‘A Civic Event’ which is a free themed event open to the entire community with a portion being funded and supported by Citizen University. During these polarizing times, what communities need more than ever is the space to grow together in productive, meaningful ways. ‘A Civic Event’ brings together diverse members of the community to experience art, music, food, poetry, a relevant civic message, and impactful dialogue. Participants leave feeling engaged and empowered. We create space to share new perspectives. With these events we also create space that encourages our community to find ways of connecting intentionally with each other. Our themes have been voting, civic responsibility, gifts, civil rights, and elections in Arizona.

On October 9, 2024, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in partnership with Citizen University and HD South, sponsored by Pettitt Wealth, produced A Civic Event on the topic of No Strangers. Generously hosted in the Neely Room at HD South, community members came together to share their views on what it means to be “No Strangers.”

The arrival request was to share a story with someone new about what sparked a connection with a new friend.

An interactive exercise posing this question was answered in numerous ways:

  • What are ways you can learn more about people that are new to you?
  • What are ways to encourage people who feel disconnected from their communities to get involved?

Answers included:

  • Give Compliments
  • Be curious
  • Ask questions
  • Ask what lights them up?
  • Ask how do they spend their time?

The group then delved into deeper conversations about what sustains relationships.

There was even more conversation on relationships including these inquiries:

  • How have you built relationships with people you don’t know?
  • What strategies can you recommend to move from strangers to collaborators?
  • How can we create spaces where new community members feel welcome to share their perspectives.

With lovely music played on guitar by Brian Campbell and a delightful charcuterie table, guests were motivated to share and participate. Book ended with inspiring experiences, one an original poem written and read by Mary Flatt, the other an extraordinary exhibit in Gallery 4 called No Strangers, the encouraging and informative civic message was delivered by Alan Fitzgerald of Art Intersection. The event was well attended and well received.

Some key takeaways from the discussions included the following:

  • Share your fears – it demonstrates your humanity.
  • Be vulnerable – it inspires others to do the same.
  • Work on achieving a project together to encourage strong bonds.

We concluded the event touring the No Strangers exhibit in Art Intersection’s Gallery 4 housed at HD South. “Gallery 4 presents visual art exhibitions with strong social, environmental, and cultural messages.”

The next free civic event, open to the public, will be January 9, 2025 at 3:00PM. The location is TBD.
