GPS Budget Override Continuation
Pro Statement
The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically supports a “Yes” vote to continue the existing 15% budget override, which was approved in November 2019 and has been in place since the 2020/21 school year, generating approximately $36 million annually.
GPS has served as a good steward of tax dollars, identified efficiencies, and continues to outperform districts across the State with 14 A+ Schools of Excellence while returning 73.5% of every dollar to the classroom to sustain academic programming.
Our local educators are charged with producing the high-performing and qualified workforce our employers have come to depend on. This talent pipeline requires diverse educational opportunities, including access to career and technical education; arts and culture; AP, honors, and dual enrollment courses; and specialized programs that meet individual students’ needs.
The continuation of the budget override is crucial to retaining high-quality teachers and staff, maintaining diverse programming to meet the needs of all students, and supporting the future-ready success of more than 32,000 students in our community.
Our business community recognizes the pivotal role of education in shaping our future workforce and stands firmly behind the importance of a premier education community. Businesses understand that funding is not just a necessity but a responsibility to meet the needs of our students and their families.
Approved – June 2024
