The CATALYST's Role in Small Business Month

Every May, communities across the United States celebrate National Small Business Month—a time dedicated to recognizing the vital role small businesses play in driving the economy, creating jobs, and fostering innovation. Originally stemming from National Small Business Week, established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, the monthlong focus has grown into a broader movement to uplift local entrepreneurs and ensure they have the support and resources needed to thrive.

In Gilbert, that mission has taken on new life with the launch of The CATALYST: Gilbert’s Business Resource Center, a collaborative initiative of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Town of Gilbert Office of Economic Development. More than a physical space, The CATALYST represents a shift in how local leaders are investing in small business success.

Why Small Business Month Matters

Small businesses make up more than 99% of all U.S. businesses and employ nearly half of the private workforce. In Gilbert, they are the heartbeat of the community—from family-owned storefronts and tech startups to independent consultants and home-based service providers. Yet, for many entrepreneurs, accessing the right resources at the right time can be the difference between flourishing and floundering.

Small Business Month serves as both a celebration and a call to action: a reminder to shop local, support new ideas, and reduce barriers to entrepreneurship. It’s also a time when chambers, economic developers, and civic leaders rally behind their small business communities—something The CATALYST was designed to do year-round.

The CATALYST Difference

Located within the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce, The CATALYST is more than a name—it’s a commitment to being the spark that helps businesses grow. It was launched to address a central need: providing holistic, hands-on support for businesses at every stage, whether they’re just getting started, scaling up, or navigating new challenges.

Here’s how The CATALYST stands out:

  • Mentorship Matching Entrepreneurs are paired with seasoned professionals who can guide them through real-world challenges, offering both accountability and perspective.
  • Technical Assistance From navigating local permitting and licensing to understanding digital marketing or HR compliance, The CATALYST provides access to expert advisors who can help untangle the details.
  • Workshops and Training Regular sessions—ranging from financial literacy to procurement readiness—are offered in collaboration with community partners, bringing education directly to the business community.
  • One-on-One Office Hours Local subject-matter experts host open office hours for entrepreneurs to get personalized help, whether they’re looking for capital, insurance advice, or growth strategies.
  • Hybrid Resources The Gilbert HUUB platform, accessible online, complements in-person support by offering on-demand webinars, tools, and access to a virtual community of local entrepreneurs.

Community-Powered Impact

By rooting itself in partnership and accessibility, The CATALYST ensures that support isn't limited to a select few. Its mission aligns with the spirit of Small Business Month: to elevate local voices, remove systemic barriers, and foster inclusive economic development.

As The CATALYST continues to grow, it will remain a space where ideas are nurtured, challenges are met with community, and small businesses feel seen, supported, and celebrated—not just in May, but every day.
