In a powerful display of unity, chambers of commerce from across Arizona have come together to send a clear message to Congress: preserve the tax-exempt status of chambers and nonprofit organizations that power our communities.
On May 15, 2025, more than 30 chambers—including the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce and members of the East Valley and West Valley alliances—signed a joint letter to Arizona’s congressional delegation urging federal leaders to protect the ability of chambers and nonprofits to continue their mission-driven work without the burden of new taxes.
Why This Matters
Chambers of commerce and nonprofits play an essential role in the health and vitality of our economy and communities. From advocating for small businesses and facilitating workforce development, to delivering life-saving services in healthcare, education, and housing, these organizations step in where government resources end.
Many of these organizations rely on donations, grants, and private-sector partnerships to operate. Imposing new or increased taxes would not only threaten their operations but also limit their ability to serve those who depend on them the most.
“Without the work of nonprofits and associations, many critical services – like healthcare, nutrition, and workforce development – could become more expensive or inaccessible for people in need,” the letter states.
A Century-Old Commitment
Nonprofit tax exemption has been a cornerstone of U.S. policy for over 100 years, recognizing the value these organizations bring to the public good. As Congress revisits tax policy in 2025, Arizona’s chambers are asking federal lawmakers to reaffirm that commitment.
Preserving current tax treatment will allow chambers and nonprofits to focus on what they do best—creating jobs, supporting businesses, lifting underserved populations, and building stronger communities.
A Statewide Coalition
This call to action was not just from a few voices—it was a chorus representing every corner of Arizona, from Bullhead City to Nogales, Flagstaff to Yuma. It includes multicultural chambers, tourism bureaus, and regional coalitions that understand firsthand the ripple effect these organizations have on local prosperity.
Looking Ahead
As tax reform discussions continue in Washington, Arizona’s chambers are watching closely—and advocating fiercely—to ensure that nonprofits are not left behind.
Their message is simple and powerful: support the organizations that support our communities.
