Gilbert Chamber Issues Statement in Support of MCCCD Jobs Training Contract with the Town of Gilbert

September 28, 2020

Dear Mayor Scott Anderson and Members of Gilbert Town Council:

On behalf of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce, I am writing in support of the Jobs Training contract with the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) to deliver career and technical education programs as part of the #GilbertTogether Business Recovery program.

Furthermore, I support the change in funding source from CDBG funds to the CARES Act funds as this action would appropriately categorize the program as part of the #GilbertTogether Business Recovery program while also freeing up CDBG funds to support area non-profits.

The #GilbertTogether Business Recovery Program is proposed to strengthen economic development and workforce development by stimulating job creation and retention, stimulating capital investment, strengthening organizational effectiveness, and improving operational efficiency through innovation.

As outlined, the services of this Jobs Training contract will strongly compliment the third phase of the #GilbertTogether Business Recovery program. In response to COVID-19, many industries have accelerated their use of technology and tools for innovation while also redefining their business models and talent acquisition. This Jobs Training program will support Gilbert residents in their journey to reskill and upskill to meet the rapidly evolving employment needs of our businesses.

As a representative of the review committee, I feel the scope of work presented by MCCCD is in direct alignment with the Town’s interest in providing job training services to those residents impacted by COVID-19. Additionally, this program casts a wide net in benefit of at least 120 individuals. This could have a direct and significant impact on Gilbert businesses.

Respectfully,

Sarah Watts
